Stogdill’s definition has three key components:

  • It defines leadership as an interpersonal process in which one individual seeks to shape and direct the behavior of others.
  • It sets leadership in social context, in which the members of the group to be influenced are subordinates or ‘followers’.
  • It establishes a criterion for effective leadership in goal achievement, which is one practical objective of leadership theory and research.

Most definitions of leadership share these components. While some commentators believe that leaders and managers play different roles and make different contributions, Mintzberg (1977) suggests that, in practice, the distinction between leadership and management is blurred. Leaders generate great performance in their employees by raising their private rewards from attaining objectives and from making the route to such rewards simpler to follow through guidance, instruction, reducing or eliminating obstacles and issues and by increasing the chances for individual gratification.

Leadership is about changing the behaviour of others.

The Key feature of followers is they have to be prepared to obey. Direction is a land of the connection between leader and follower. We will need to understand why people are ready to allow themselves to be affected by a few people and not others. We thus must comprehend the character of compliance.

The best leadership style appears to be one where the supervisor shares power with customers, as it increases their satisfaction and efficacy. Managers that provide discretion to subordinates will boost their referent authority over these boomers. Allowing access and discretion to information are kinds of symbolic benefit.
